From May through to November, thousands of humpback whales travel along the NSW coastline as part of their remarkable annual migration. And here in Port Macquarie, we’re fortunate to have a front-row seat.

When is Whale Watching Season in Port Macquarie?
While whales can be spotted off the coast between May and November, August and September are particularly exciting months for whale watching in Port Macquarie
After travelling north towards warmer breeding grounds, humpback whales begin their southbound journey from around August and continue through spring. As the season progresses, lucky whale watchers may even spot mothers travelling with their calves as they make the long journey south.
It makes late winter and early spring a wonderful time to grab the binoculars, head for the coast and keep an eye on the horizon.
Look for the tell-tale signs – a plume of spray above the water, a tail disappearing beneath the surface or, if you’re lucky, the unforgettable sight of a humpback breaching clear of the ocean.
Best Places for Whale Watching in Port Macquarie
One of the joys of whale watching here is that you don’t necessarily need to book a tour or venture far offshore.
Tacking Point Lighthouse
The lighthouse is one of Port Macquarie’s best-known whale-watching locations. Built in 1879, its elevated position and sweeping ocean views make it a beautiful place to spread out a picnic rug and watch the migration unfold.
Port Macquarie Coastal Walk
Turn whale watching into a morning or afternoon outdoors with a walk along Port Macquarie’s spectacular coastline. The walk begins near the Town Green foreshore and passes Town Beach, Rocky Beach Lookout and Nobby’s Beach. Continue past Harry’s Lookout and Sea Acres before reaching Tacking Point Lighthouse, one of Port Macquarie’s best whale-watching spots.
Kattang Nature Reserve and Crowdy Bay National Park
For a whale-watching day trip, head south of Port Macquarie to Kattang Nature Reserve or Crowdy Bay National Park, where spectacular coastal lookouts await.
Whale Watching Cruises in Port Macquarie
For a different perspective, Port Macquarie also offers whale-watching cruises during the migration season.
